Bear’s Breeches

While I was in my yard today, weeding I noticed my  bears breeches are blooming at that time. I like the thorn in flower color with dusty purple and green. I found an interesting article on the history of garden JSTOR, vol. 24, No. 1, Summer 1996, entitled “The story of crooked” Bear head “Acanthus mollis Puzzling name.” The article gives a very deep theory basically says that the name derives from its medieval name, “Branca Ursina”. They assumed that the bracts seem to be claws – then “ursi” and “Direction” transformed over time into the breech. Anyway, I think the name of the flower is very cute and beautiful.
